Road Trip in Ukraine: How to Plan a Comfortable Route?

Travelling by car gives you the freedom to choose your own route, stop at interesting places and not depend on public transport timetables. In just a few days, you can see different cities, head into the mountains, visit lesser-known tourist spots and change your plans along the way.

But a good road trip requires preparation. It is important to calculate distances correctly, plan stops, find places to stay overnight and avoid turning the journey into several days spent behind the wheel. Here is how to plan a road trip around Ukraine so that you have enough time both for the journey and for the holiday itself.

1. Decide on the route and duration of your trip

Before setting off, decide on the main purpose of your trip. It could be a holiday in the Carpathians, exploring historic cities, a journey to the seaside or a route with several stops in different regions.

Do not try to cover as many locations as possible in a short time. It is better to choose 2–3 main points and interesting places along the way than to spend most of every day in the car.

You can use Google Maps or other navigation services for planning. Check not only the distance, but also the estimated travel time, road conditions, possible diversions and places to stop.

2. Calculate distances and time behind the wheel

One of the most common mistakes when planning a road trip is focusing only on the number of kilometres. In reality, the duration of a journey is affected by road conditions, traffic, weather, roadworks and stops.

To make your route comfortable:

  • do not plan too many hours behind the wheel in a single day;
  • allow extra time for traffic jams and unforeseen circumstances;
  • plan stops for rest, food and refuelling;
  • leave free time for walks and visits to interesting places.

The Patrol Police of Ukraine recommends taking regular breaks every 2–3 hours to rest and stretch your legs. Therefore, do not plan your route as if the car will travel continuously from the starting point to the destination.

3. Choose interesting stops along the way in advance

Stops are often what make a road trip more interesting. You do not necessarily have to take the shortest route: sometimes it is worth adding a small town, a natural attraction or a local restaurant to your journey.

When planning, pay attention to:

  • Natural attractions: viewpoints, waterfalls, lakes and national parks.
  • Historic sites: castles, fortresses, old town centres and architectural landmarks.
  • Gastronomic stops: local restaurants, cafés and venues serving regional cuisine.
  • Places for a short break: parks, waterfronts and cosy spots where you can take a walk before continuing your route.

Save your chosen points on the map in advance. This will make it easier to navigate along the way and change the order of your stops if necessary.

4. Plan where you will stay during your road trip

If your route takes more than one day, it is better to decide in advance where you will spend the night. This is especially important for long journeys, when you do not want to use up your energy looking for accommodation after several hours behind the wheel.

When choosing a hotel, pay attention to:

  • its location in relation to your route;
  • the availability of parking and the terms of its use;
  • check-in and check-out times;
  • the option of having breakfast before continuing your journey;
  • additional services that may be important specifically for your trip.

It is not always best to look for a hotel directly next to the road. Sometimes it is more convenient to stay in a city or tourist region, spend the evening there and set aside a few hours to explore the area.

5. Where to go by car: travel ideas with Ribas Hotels

Ukraine offers many destinations for road trips. If you want to combine the journey with a proper holiday, you can plan several days in the Carpathians or a stay at a countryside resort.

The Carpathians and Bukovel. This mountain region is ideal for a trip with stops in nature, walks and relaxation among the mountains. For an overnight stay, consider Ribas Karpaty in Bukovel. It is an option for those who want the mountains to be the main part of their road trip.

Polyana, Zakarpattia. If your route passes through Zakarpattia, you can plan a stop at WOL.GREEN Polyana by Ribas. Polyana is known for its spa traditions and Carpathian landscapes.

Mykulychyn. For a trip to the Carpathians, you can also choose Agate Resort by Ribas. The resort is surrounded by mountain scenery and coniferous forest.

Kyiv region. Not every road trip has to last several days. For a shorter trip out of the city, consider Mandra Petrichor, located in the village of Zabuiannia in Kyiv region. You can view accommodation options in the Ribas Hotels catalogue.

Before booking, check the current accommodation terms, room availability, parking and the list of services offered by the chosen hotel.

6. What should you check in your car before the trip?

Even a well-planned route will not prevent problems if the car is not ready for the journey. Before setting off, check its technical condition:

  • the level of engine oil and other technical fluids;
  • the condition of the tyres and their pressure;
  • the brakes and lights;
  • that the windscreen wipers are working properly;
  • the presence of a spare wheel or repair kit.

Also take a first-aid kit, a warning triangle, chargers, documents and water. If you are travelling with children or pets, take care of their safety and comfort in the car in advance.

Also check the weather forecast, current road conditions and restrictions in the regions along your route. Under martial law, also take into account the current travel rules, the curfew and the latest security updates.

7. Plan your route, but leave room for spontaneity

There is no need to schedule every hour of the trip. It is enough to have a main route, a list of places you would like to visit and accommodation booked for the planned nights.

Leave some time for unplanned stops. You may discover an interesting café along the way, want to take a longer walk by a lake or decide to stay in a city you like.

The main thing is not to make covering the greatest possible distance your goal. A comfortable road trip consists not only of the destination, but also of the time you spend on the way.

Conclusion

A road trip around Ukraine is an opportunity to create a journey at your own pace and according to your interests. To make it comfortable, plan your route in advance, calculate your travel time, schedule stops and choose hotels for overnight stays.

You can view accommodation options in different regions in the Ribas Hotels catalogue. Choose a location that complements your route and plan a stop where you can not only spend the night, but also rest before the next stage of your journey.
