To see mountain lakes, ancient castles, canyons, cities with European architecture and places where you simply want to stand quietly and take in the view, you do not necessarily have to travel abroad. Ukraine is so diverse that travelling between two regions can sometimes feel like changing countries.
In this selection, we have collected the most beautiful and outstanding places in Ukraine that are worth seeing at least once: natural landmarks, fortresses, historic cities, the Carpathians and atmospheric locations for short and longer trips.
Do not try to cover the entire list in one holiday. It is better to choose one region, leave room for spontaneous stops and gradually create your own map of favourite places in Ukraine.
Before your trip: check the current security situation, local restrictions, curfew, the availability of tourist sites and the rules for visiting protected natural areas.
Which places in Ukraine are worth visiting: a quick selection
Outstanding places in Ukraine: 30 locations to see
The list includes not only Ukraine’s best-known tourist attractions. We have added natural locations, architectural complexes and places worth planning a separate trip around.
The most beautiful natural places in Ukraine
1. Synevyr Lake, Zakarpattia
Synevyr is one of the best-known natural places in the Ukrainian Carpathians. The lake lies among coniferous forests and mountain slopes, and the best way to see it is not to rush through in 20 minutes between other stops, but to allow time for a walk around it.
Synevyr can easily be combined with other locations in Zakarpattia, but for a short trip it is better not to try to see everything from Uzhhorod to the highlands in a single day.
2. Hoverla, Ivano-Frankivsk and Zakarpattia regions
Ukraine’s highest mountain is an almost essential stop for anyone wanting to try a real mountain route. The climb should not be treated as an ordinary tourist walk: you need suitable footwear, water, an assessment of the weather and a realistic understanding of your physical fitness.
The reward is the panorama of the Chornohora Range, which is difficult to convey in photographs.
3. Shypit Waterfall, Zakarpattia
One of Ukraine’s best-known waterfalls is located near the village of Pylypets. An accessible route leads to it, so Shypit is easy to add to a trip around Zakarpattia even without extensive hiking experience.
The waterfall is particularly beautiful after rain and in spring, when the flow is stronger.
4. Bakota and the Dniester Canyon
Bakota is a case where the main attraction is not a particular structure, but the entire landscape. The high banks of the Dniester, bays, cliffs and panoramic views create one of Podillia’s most recognisable natural scenes.
It is worth coming here for more than an hour. Plan a walk, viewpoints and sunset time — the slow pace is what reveals Bakota best.
5. Butsky Canyon, Cherkasy region
Granite cliffs above the Hirskyi Tikych River create a landscape that bears little resemblance to the flat terrain of central Ukraine.
Butsky Canyon is well suited to a one-day road trip, a picnic or an active weekend. At the same time, take care near the cliffs — not all areas are equipped as tourist viewpoints.
6. Basalt Columns, Rivne region
Walls of basalt in regular geometric shapes look almost artificial, although they were created by nature. Near the quarries, water contrasts with the dark stone, making the location one of the most recognisable in the Rivne region.
This is a good example of an unusual place in Ukraine that can be included in a longer route through Volyn and Polissia.
7. Tunnel of Love, Klevan
The green corridor surrounding the railway track has long been one of the most photographed places in Ukraine.
The Tunnel of Love looks most impressive in late spring and summer, when the trees form a dense green arch, while in autumn the location changes colour almost every week.
8. Dovbush Rocks
Massive sandstone cliffs among the Carpathian forest create a natural labyrinth of passages, paths and viewpoints.
This is an option for those who want a somewhat more active walk without undertaking a full high-mountain hike. The location is easy to combine with a trip through the Carpathians.
9. Probiy Waterfall and Yaremche
Probiy is one of Yaremche’s landmarks and one of the most accessible natural locations in the Carpathians. It is easy to combine with the Dovbush Trail, a walk around the town and nearby mountain routes.
Yaremche is also a convenient base for trips to Mykulychyn, Tatariv and Bukovel.
10. Valley of Narcissi, Zakarpattia
This location has a very short season: the main reason to come here is the mass spring flowering of narrow-leaved narcissus.
That is why it is worth checking the current flowering conditions before your trip. At the right time, the valley turns into a vast white field amid the Zakarpattian landscape.
Historical and architectural landmarks of Ukraine
11. Kamianets-Podilskyi Fortress
If you were compiling a list of the most recognisable outstanding places in Ukraine, this fortress would almost certainly be among the first.
The Old Town, the Smotrych River canyon and the castle complex create such a complete landscape that it is worth travelling here for more than the history alone. It is best to stay for at least one night and see the city without the daytime tourist rush.
12. Khotyn Fortress
The massive defensive walls above the Dniester form one of Ukraine’s most impressive fortresses.
Khotyn is easy to combine with Kamianets-Podilskyi in a two-day itinerary: the distance makes it possible to see both sites without constantly changing hotels or spending long hours on the road.
13. Palanok Castle in Mukachevo
The castle rises above Mukachevo on a volcanic hill and is visible from almost every part of the city.
A walk through its courtyards and exhibitions can easily take several hours, after which it is worth leaving time for Mukachevo itself or continuing your route through other cities in Zakarpattia.
14. Lubart’s Castle in Lutsk
Lutsk Castle is one of the country’s best-preserved medieval fortresses and the main reason to begin exploring Volyn with Lutsk.
After visiting the castle, you can walk through the old part of the city and stay overnight, turning a single landmark into a full city break.
15. Tustan, Lviv region
Tustan is fascinating because its architecture was literally integrated into the natural rocks. The wooden structures of the fortress are gone today, but traces of its former layout remain on the stone.
Today, it is simultaneously a historical landmark, a natural location and a good walking route.
16. Olesko Castle
One of the best-known castles in the Lviv region and a convenient stop on a road trip from Lviv.
Olesko Castle is often the first stop when exploring the “Golden Horseshoe of Lviv region” — a route connecting several historic residences in the region.
17. Pidhirtsi Castle
Unlike austere defensive fortresses, Pidhirtsi is more reminiscent of an aristocratic residence.
Even the appearance of the complex, its park and the surrounding landscape make it one of the most atmospheric architectural landmarks in the Lviv region.
18. Residence of the Metropolitans of Bukovina and Dalmatia, Chernivtsi
Today, the historic complex houses Yuriy Fedkovych Chernivtsi National University. Its architecture is so distinctive that the residence itself has become Chernivtsi’s main landmark.
The complex is included on the UNESCO World Heritage List, and a visit should be followed by a walk through the city’s historic centre.
19. Saint Sophia’s Cathedral, Kyiv
One of the key historical symbols of Kyiv and of Ukraine as a whole. The cathedral and monastery buildings remind us how long the capital’s history is, long before the emergence of the modern metropolis.
Saint Sophia’s Cathedral is part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site and can easily be combined in one walking route with other central landmarks of the capital.
20. Historic Centre of Lviv
It is difficult to single out one building in Lviv — the main attraction is the historic centre itself, with Rynok Square, churches, townhouses, courtyards and narrow streets.
Lviv’s centre is also included on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The best strategy here is to look at the map less and allow yourself to turn into random lanes more often.
Beautiful cities and cultural places in Ukraine
21. Odesa and the Odesa Opera House
Odesa is a case where architecture, the sea and the city’s character are equally important. Start with the historic centre and the Odesa Opera House, then continue along Primorskyi Boulevard, Derybasivska Street and the coast.
If you would like to plan a programme for several days, use our guide “What to see in Odesa in 1–3 days”.
For accommodation in the very heart of the historic centre, consider Ribas Duke — the hotel is located opposite the Opera House. If the sea is your main goal, WOL.121 by Ribas is closer to the coast.
22. Chernivtsi
Chernivtsi is a city where there is no need to make a long must-see list. It is best explored on foot: the university complex, squares, old townhouses and quiet central streets naturally create the route.
For a short one- or two-day trip, it is one of the most comfortable formats for a city break.
23. Uzhhorod
A compact centre, riverside promenades, a castle, historic buildings and the cherry blossom season make Uzhhorod one of the most atmospheric cities in Zakarpattia.
In spring, people often come specifically for the pink avenues, but the city is interesting outside the flowering season too — especially as a starting point for travelling around the region.
24. Kamianets-Podilskyi
The fortress is only part of the city. Old neighbourhoods, bridges, the Smotrych Canyon and the panoramas of Podillia create a destination where it is worth staying longer than one tour.
Kamianets works especially well as a base for trips to Khotyn and Bakota.
25. Uman and Sofiivka Dendrological Park
One of Ukraine’s most popular park complexes easily turns Uman into a ready-made day trip.
It is best to plan a visit in spring or autumn, when the park’s landscapes are particularly expressive, although in summer you can also spend a significant part of the day among its ponds, avenues and greenery.
26. Bila Tserkva and Oleksandriia Dendrological Park
Another large historic park well suited to a trip not far from Kyiv.
Do not limit your trip to Oleksandriia: the city has other interesting routes too, which we have collected separately in our article about tourist places in Bila Tserkva.
The Carpathians and Zakarpattia: outstanding places in Ukraine for a mountain trip
27. Bukovel
Ukraine’s best-known mountain resort has long moved beyond the winter season. In summer, hiking routes, lifts, activities by the lake and other tourist infrastructure are available here.
We covered the warm season in more detail in our article about Bukovel in summer. For accommodation at the resort itself, consider Ribas Karpaty.
28. Yaremche
Yaremche is one of the most convenient starting points for a first trip to the Carpathians. Probiy Waterfall, the Dovbush Trail, mountain views and the proximity of other resorts make it possible to create a route of almost any difficulty.
You can come here for a day, but two or three days will give you considerably more freedom.
29. Verkhovyna
If Bukovel is about tourist infrastructure, Verkhovyna is more about Hutsul culture, the mountains and the life of the region.
Come here for ethnographic museums, local stories, Carpathian cuisine and the feeling that the mountains are not merely a beautiful backdrop for photographs.
30. Mykulychyn
Mykulychyn is a good choice for those who want to be closer to nature while staying in a convenient location between Yaremche, Tatariv and Bukovel.
The place does not require a packed programme: sometimes all you need is mountain air, a walk, morning coffee and a view from the window. This is precisely the kind of experience offered, among others, by Mandra Morion.
When is the best time to visit the most beautiful places in Ukraine?
There is no universal season for travelling around Ukraine — and that is more of an advantage.
In spring, plan a visit to Uzhhorod for the cherry blossoms, the Valley of Narcissi, dendrological parks and city trips before the summer heat begins.
In summer, the greatest number of opportunities opens up for the Carpathians, canyons, lakes, long road trips and walks in nature.
In autumn, the Carpathians, Zakarpattia, parks and castle routes in the Lviv region are particularly beautiful. We covered this season separately in the article “5 reasons to visit the Carpathians in autumn”.
In winter, the Carpathians and mountain resorts become the main draw, but Lviv, Chernivtsi, Uzhhorod and other cities are also well suited to a short atmospheric weekend.
How to plan a route through Ukraine’s outstanding places
The most common mistake is to see a list of beautiful places and try to combine as many stops as possible in the shortest time.
It is better to build your trip around regions.
- Podillia: Kamianets-Podilskyi → Khotyn → Bakota.
- Zakarpattia: Uzhhorod → Mukachevo → Poliana → Synevyr.
- Prykarpattia: Yaremche → Mykulychyn → Bukovel → Verkhovyna.
- Lviv region: Lviv → Olesko Castle → Pidhirtsi → Tustan.
- Volyn and Rivne region: Lutsk → Tunnel of Love → Basalt Columns.
This way, you will spend less time travelling between stops and see not a random set of locations, but an entire region.
If you would like to start with a shorter trip, also browse our selection of travel ideas on the Ribas Hotels blog or choose a Ribas Hotels hotel in the region you need and build your route around it.

Outstanding places in Ukraine you will want to return to
It is impossible to finish a list of Ukraine’s most beautiful places with the number 30. After every trip, there is another village, castle, trail, little café or viewpoint you want to add to your own map.
So treat this selection not as a ranking or a checklist to rush through. Choose a region, find one main destination and leave room for whatever you encounter along the way.
That is how Ukraine reveals itself best — not through the number of “been there” markers, but through the moments that make you want to return.
